Matador Field, with
a seating capacity of 1,200 is the home of Cal State Northridge
baseball.
The field is located
on Lindley Avenue between Halsted and Lassen Streets.
Cal State Northridge
began playing baseball at Matador Field in 1961. In the first
collegiate game at the facility, the Matadors suffered a 10-8
setback to Claremont-Mudd on March 4, 1961.
Northridge claimed
its first victory at Matador Field with a 9-3 triumph in the
second game of a doubleheader against Long Beach State on March
25, 1961.
Thirty one years
later, the Matadors celebrated their 500th win at Matador Field,
defeating Nevada by a score of 9-4 on April 5, 1992. Northridge
posted its 600th Matador Field win with an 11-9 win over Loyola
Marymount on March 7, 1997.
Since its introduction
in 1961, Matador Field has undergone many improvements. Renovations
to the field began in 1975 and in three years, the facility had
a redesigned infield, an electronic scoreboard donated by Sam
Leeper and Fred Yates, a batting cage (the first covered batting
cage on any college campus on the west coast at the time), a
protective chain link fence around the field, a snack bar, concrete
walkways and bleachers with a press box.
In 1981, a clubhouse
equipped with lockers for the players and coaches was built and
attached to the Matadors dugout.
Cal State Northridge
renovated the infield at Matador Field at a cost of $26,000 in
the fall of 1993. The project was completed by Mike Wilson Landscape
Services of Yorba Linda and included an excavation of the existing
turf and the installation of sod in the infield area and along
the perimeter of the baselines. The infield was graded and leveled
and a timed irrigation system was installed.
The new infield
surface features bermuda grass and a dirt warning track encircles
the outfield. The dirt portion of the infield is Dodger Mix,
which is crushed brick and clay.
In 1996, Cal State
Northridge unveiled its newest addition to the ballpark, a state-of-the-art
scoreboard, complete with animated graphics. The scoreboard,
which also features inning-by-inning run totals, is located just
behind the right field wall.
Stadium dimensions
are 325 feet down the left field line, 330 feet down the right
field line, 375 feet to the power alleys and 400 fee to straightaway
center field.
